Assistant Accounts Manager

As an Assistant Accounts Manager at BSM, you will be responsible in controling the efficient accounting operation of the SMC and handles all accounting activities in order to ensure the compliance of the SMC with the local tax and accounting legislation and standards. Oversees the completion of ledger accounts and controls that the accounting department operates under the relevant procedures and processes of BSM.
Key Responsibilities
Reviews all ship-owner financial statements and other accounting reports, ensuring they are timely and accurately prepared in accordance with relevant client contracts and agreements, to maintain compliance with accounting procedures, obligations, and respective flag ownership legislation.
Reviews monthly technical variance reports and cash position statements for vessels under SMC’s management, and handles the prompt settlement of all vessel-related accounts/payments (e.g., invoices, crew payroll), supporting smooth vessel operations.
Assures that accounting records are prepared and maintained in line with BSM accounting policies, chart of accounts, and related accounting principles and practices, ensuring subordinate ledgers reconcile with the general ledger. Safeguards effective implementation and maintenance of management accounting systems to provide prompt and adequate cost and financial information for control and evaluation.

Contributes to the handling and forecasting of SMC’s weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual cash flow, supports preparation of cash flow reports, and collaborates with other departments to forecast future cash flow requirements, enhancing efficient operations and fair utilization of financial resources.
Monitors and controls the timely and accurate execution of payments due, identifies potential discrepancies, and provides analytical reporting to SMC management, liaising with relevant departments for resolution to strengthen company cash flow.
Ensures accurate issuance of invoices and cheques, and their prompt execution, to comply with payment obligations and contractual agreements.
Coordinates and develops all required tax and financial statements according to schedule, ensuring timely submission for review to comply with local legislation and company standards.
Participates in external and internal audits, providing required information to auditors for accurate and fast execution, and follows up on corrective actions.
Keeps up-to-date with changes in accounting legislation, reviews departmental operations, and proposes improvements in policies, procedures, and guidelines. Upon approval, implements enhancements to ensure smooth workflow and compliance with local and international accounting standards.
Coordinates, coaches, and motivates subordinates through training, development, performance management, and salary progression, ensuring staff have the knowledge, skills, and support to perform effectively and contribute to the department’s short- and long-term objectives.
Education & Qualifications:
University degree in Finance or Accounting or equivalent, ideally a licensed CPA
At least 8-10 years of work experience, ideally in Ship Management
Job-Specific Skills:
Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems
Good Knowledge of Maritime Accounting legislation
Ability to analyse financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
Advanced analytical and conceptual thinking
Attention to detail
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of the local/regional maritime market conditions
Very good people management skills
Knowledge of the maritime legal framework e.g. employers’ obligations, recruitment prerequisites etc.
Fluency in English
